Why am I still hearing muted tracks? I hit the yellow button with the M on it for a track, and... I'm still hearing it.

this is either an existing session created with an earlier version or you still have ~/.ardour2/ardour.rc in a state created by an earlier buggy version of ardour. See http://ardour.org/node/3613 for details.

This is most likely because you are using an older version of Ardour. ;)
As you can see on the news page this should be fixed in 2.8.9. For a manual workaround I'd recommend searching the forum and/or the issue tracker as this topic came up several times allready.
