ubuntu studio comes with

ubuntu studio comes with some audio apps pre installed, and it uses gnome. I prefer KDE, which I believe you can install with studio. If you learn to compile and install your own apps though, you will always be up to date. I have a step by step somewhere here for installing the VST version of ardour on Kubuntu (should work with any *ubuntu, though)
